How to apply for GSTN

In India, Goods and Services Tax is levied on companies that provide goods or services to consumers. However, there are certain parameters based on which a profit-making entity is considered eligible to pay GST. A company has to undergo GST registration after which it gets a GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Index Number).

The GSTN tracks the approvals made by a business organization on time and maintains important financial information about it. There are several GST slabs prescribed in India in percentages ranging from 5% to 28%. The GST rate for every service or product is determined during the annual Union Finance Budget.

Here we are presenting the process of online GST registration in detail along with the list of required documents.

GST Application Process

As per the taxation laws in India after 1st July 2017, every seller has to get GST registration done, irrespective of the goods or services he deals in. However, GST enrollment has not been made mandatory for those who trade services that fall under the exempted categories.

A seller can easily get a new GST registration from the GST site as it is a clear and paperless process. Now, let’s take a look at the important steps that you need to follow to successfully enroll your business for GST and get an index number.

Part A- GST Application: Form Generation

The first step to apply for a GST profile is to get a temporary registration number (TRN). The GST site will ask for your business email address, active Indian mobile number, and PAN number.

1. Visit the Indian GST Portal and Select to New Registration option

The official GST portal of India is https://www.gst.gov.in/. The New Registration option is present under the Registration tab, and you need to click on it.

2. Enter Document Details

As soon as you click on New Registration, you will be redirected to the registration page where you need to enter the document details mentioned above.

In this step, the portal verifies your phone number and email ID with the help of two OTPs. In case of failures, the OTP is regenerated after 10 minutes.

3. TRN Generation

The portal sends you the temporary reference number immediately after the phone number and email verification. Once the TRN is generated, you need to enter it in the right place on the new registration page.

4. Final OTP Verification

The final OTP verification happens before the GST site shows you the “My Saved Application” page. You need to proceed with the application process within 15 days to avoid deletion of the TRN.

Part B- Filling the Application Form

On the GST site, you will find 10 tabs to fill the application form. Check the table below to know about the documents required to fill the form:

Form Filling Process

First, you need to fill all the tabs correctly and save them. Then, input all the mandatory fields related to the type of business. Next, enter all the information about the authorized signatory and wait until the portal verifies it completely.

Part C- Registering the Digital Signature

You need to digitally sign the application form before submitting it on the GST site. Whether you are enrolling for a company or LLP, digital signature registration is mandatory. You can use DSC software to create your digital signature or choose to upload an e-signature.

However, make sure you are submitting the e-signature in the correct file format demanded by the portal. You can also take a thorough review of all the data entered so far on the GST site before submitting it.

Part D- GST Application Submission

There are three ways in which you can finally verify your GST application before submitting it. They are DSC supported verification, EVC supported verification and e-signature verification.

You can choose the most convenient way to verify your application before final submission. However, an ARN is generated when the final verification is completed. The ARN helps you track your application after it is submitted.

If the portal successfully accepts your application, you will receive an acceptance email and the status of the application will show “accepted”. You will also receive a GSTIN and your GST profile will automatically get a place on the GSTN.

You will also get login details that will help you access your business’ GST profile. After logging in for the first time, you can change both the username and password. After the completion of the application process, you can receive the registration certificate within 3 to 5 working days.

Note: If you are looking for top companies and industries databases at the best price. Choose 77Data, which is one of the best data provider companies in India.

Conclusion

The introduction of GST eliminated several taxes levied by the state and the centre. Traders, businessmen, and manufacturers are no longer required to get multiple registrations with the tax bodies, thereby streamlining the process of indirect taxation in the country considerably.

To run a business in India and expand it smoothly, you should always create a GST profile and file payments on time. Never run a business without GST registration as it attracts heavy penalties. Deliberately evading taxes may lead to paying the entire tax amount as penalty. Now businesses need to go through a few simple steps to complete the GSTN registration process only once to obtain a GSTIN. Filing GST on time helps you enjoy the benefits of GST services.
