How to Design Sheet Metal Components for Maximum Efficiency

If you want to be more efficient while designing sheet metal, first of all you should make a simple and lightweight design that uses minimum material. The less material is wasted, the more cost and time will be saved. The design should be such that it can be easily bent, cut and pressed without extra tools. Sharp corners should be avoided as they put more stress; instead, use rounded edges.
Plan the size and shape of the parts in such a way that the maximum pieces are cut from a single sheet, which optimises nesting. If holes or slots are to be added, their placement is also important – neither too close to the edge nor too close to each other. It is also important to maintain uniform thickness in the design, so that both manufacturing time and cost are under control.
And yes, use CAD software with simulation tools when designing – this will tell you upfront whether the design is workable or not. This way, the sheet metal design will be smart, time will be saved, and production will also run smoothly.
